The Helm of Destiny
Gubernaculum brings together a central mirror, wood, copper wire, metal elements, deep blue and gold within a contemporary sculptural composition exploring the relationship between destiny, free will and the power to choose one's own direction.
The name Gubernaculum comes from Latin, meaning a helm or rudder — an instrument through which direction is guided and a course is maintained.
Throughout history, the helm has symbolised navigation, leadership and the responsibility of guiding a vessel through changing conditions.
Within this artwork, the helm becomes a symbol of inner sovereignty.
At its centre rests a mirror.
The person standing before it becomes part of the composition — not merely observing the artwork, but encountering the one responsible for holding the direction.
The one who looks into the mirror is the one who holds the helm.
Entirely handcrafted in Bulgaria, Gubernaculum combines a circular wooden structure, a reflective mirror, copper wire, metal elements and individually applied metallic pigments.
Around the central mirror, a deep blue surface creates a luminous contrast with the surrounding metalwork. Dark metal elements extend beyond the circular form, connected by carefully shaped copper wire that traces an irregular outer circumference.
The composition evokes the structure of a navigational instrument while retaining the character of a contemporary symbolic artefact.
The contrast between the reflective centre, blue surface, dark metal and warm copper creates a dialogue between movement and stillness, the external world and the inner observer.
The Reverse — The Unseen Course
Gubernaculum is conceived as an artwork with two intentionally composed sides.
While the front holds the mirror, the reverse reveals a deep blue painted surface carrying individually hand-painted golden letters, four golden circular forms and subtle variations of metallic texture.
The inscriptions are arranged vertically, forming part of the artist's original language of light.
The four golden circles introduce a sense of rhythm and balance within the composition, while the surrounding blue and gold fields create an atmosphere of depth and contemplation.
The reverse is not simply a functional surface.
It is another expression of the artwork's central theme — the relationship between the visible direction and the unseen forces that shape the journey.
The front reflects the one who navigates.
The reverse holds the mystery of the journey.
More than a decorative mirror, Gubernaculum exists as a contemporary sculptural artefact — part functional object, part artistic composition and part symbolic instrument.
It speaks of destiny and conscious choice.
Of direction guided by awareness.
Of the responsibility that accompanies freedom.
Of the inner authority required to navigate one's own path.
Destiny is not only what lies ahead.
It is also how we choose to navigate towards it.
Gubernaculum is an entirely unique original. No molds, prints or reproductions are created, making the work impossible to recreate exactly.

Craftsmanship
Each Gubernaculum is individually handcrafted, bringing together wood, reflective glass, metal and copper wire within a sculptural circular composition.
The central mirror is integrated into the wooden structure, while surrounding metal elements and carefully shaped copper wire establish the distinctive form of the helm.
The deep blue surface and gold details are individually finished by hand, creating subtle variations in texture and reflection.
The reverse receives its own artistic treatment through layered blue pigments, golden inscriptions and four circular forms, completing the identity of the work from both sides.
The meeting of wood, mirror, copper and metal gives Gubernaculum its distinctive material presence — transforming the familiar idea of a helm into an object of reflection, direction and inner sovereignty.
