SENTINEL | Handcrafted Sculptural Wall Art

The Guardian at the Threshold

Sentinel brings together a ceremonial halberd, fragmented mirror and an original hand-painted language of light within a sculptural composition built around the ancient figure of the guardian—the one who stands at the threshold.

Entirely handcrafted in Bulgaria on a solid wood panel, the artwork is structured around a strong vertical axis. At its centre stands the halberd, surrounded by hundreds of individually placed mirror fragments that catch, divide and return the light. Gold markings emerge across the dark surface, giving the piece the presence of an ancient ceremonial object or protective artefact.

A sentinel does not simply guard.

A sentinel watches.

The halberd forms the central axis of the work. Historically associated with guards and ceremonial protection, here it becomes less a weapon than an emblem of vigilance—a presence positioned between what is outside and what is allowed to pass within.

Around it, fragmented mirror creates a field of constantly changing reflection. Unlike a single mirror, these individual pieces never return one complete image. They catch fragments of their surroundings, shifting with the viewer, the room and the light.

What approaches the Sentinel is reflected back.

Across the surface, an original hand-painted language of light appears in gold. The markings are not a conventional alphabet or a message intended for literal translation. They belong to the visual language of the artwork, allowing the piece to retain the mystery of an object whose original purpose is sensed rather than explained.

The symbolic composition continues onto the reverse, where further hand-painted markings form a concealed field. Once Sentinel is installed, this second layer remains largely unseen—a hidden face belonging to the artwork alone.

More than a wall artwork, Sentinel exists as a contemporary shield artefact—part painting, part sculptural object and part imagined relic. From a distance, its halberd and vertical form dominate the composition. At closer range, hundreds of mirrored surfaces, metallic textures and individually painted details begin to emerge.

It does not close the threshold.

It stands before it.

Sentinel is an entirely unique original. No molds, prints or reproductions are created.

Craftsmanship

Sentinel is created entirely by hand in Bulgaria. The halberd establishes the central axis of the composition, while the mirror fragments are individually positioned across the surface to create a layered field of reflection and light.

Every symbolic marking is painted by hand rather than printed or transferred. The work continues onto the reverse, where a second symbolic field completes the piece as an object from both sides. Variations in reflection, texture and handcrafted detail are an intentional part of its individual character.
